Stump grinding can turn an eyesore into a smart, manicured space. It doesn’t just remove the ugly stump—it helps deter pests, improves soil health, and lets you reclaim valuable ground for new planting or landscaping. Discover the difference our stump grinding service can make today.
Why choose stump grinding?
- Sharper kerb appeal: Let’s be honest—stumps aren’t pretty. Grinding them out instantly lifts the look of your garden.
- Safer underfoot: Stumps are a tripping hazard, especially in busy areas. Removing them helps reduce the risk of accidents.
- Boosted property value: A tidy, well-presented garden can add appeal when it’s time to sell.
- More usable space: Clear out old stumps and make room for lawns, beds, patios, or play areas.
Stump Heroes – How Our Stump Removal (Grinding) Works
Step 1: Arrival
After you accept our quote, we’ll arrive at the agreed time. If anything changes, we’ll let you know beforehand. Please ensure there’s enough room to park our van and deploy heavy-duty ramps to unload the grinder.
Step 2: Preparation
Before we start, we inspect the area for hazards and confirm safe working zones. If the stump is tall, we’ll cut it closer to ground level to reduce chipping time and mess. Any offcuts stay on site unless otherwise arranged.
Step 3: Positioning the Grinder
Our tracked grinder (rubber tracks to spread weight) is carefully manoeuvred into place. This helps protect lawns and soft ground, even when conditions are damp.
Step 4: Safety Set-Up
We place protective barriers around the work area to contain flying chips and shield nearby paths, glazing, vehicles, and planting.
Step 5: Grinding – First Pass
The cutting wheel—fitted with tungsten carbide teeth—sweeps across the stump, shaving material into small chips in controlled passes.
Step 6: Grinding – Final Depth
We continue methodically, lowering the cutting depth with each sweep until we reach the agreed depth below ground level, then make a final tidy pass.
Step 7: Mulch & Tidy
The grindings (wood chips mixed with soil) are left neatly on site. They make excellent mulch/compost for beds and borders and can help suppress weeds.
Step 8: Backfilling & Finishing
After spreading or removing the mulch, the cavity can be topped up with quality topsoil and finished with turf or seed—leaving the area ready to use.
Limited Access? No problem.
Standard access requirement is 74cm minimum for our main grinder. For tighter spaces we have compact machines; note that very large stumps may not be suitable for the smallest units. Tell us about your access and stump size, and we’ll recommend the best approach.
